Saint Anthony on the left reads a book and in his right hand holds his tau-shaped stick. Saint Francis crosses his hands before him and looks heavenwards. The stigmata can be seen on his hands.
The painting is dated early by comparison with other works by Sacchi such as an altarpiece of 1623-4 (Nettuno, S. Francesco). A picture answering its description is recorded in a Barberini inventory of about 1738. The picture may have been executed as a pendant to Bernini\'s Saints Andrew and Thomas (NG 6381) which was in the Barberini collection by 1627. However, the fact that a painting of Saints Francis and Anthony was described in Sacchi\'s possession at his death, suggests that it was acquired later by the Barberini.
Possibly collection of Cardinal Carlo Barberini, 1692; presented by Messrs P. and D. Colnaghi, 1967.
