John the Baptist is identified by his camel skin and reed cross. The young female saint is probably Saint Catherine of Alexandria but she has no attribute. Shepherds can be seen in the background; they - and the angel in the sky - might allude to the Annunciation to the Shepherds (New Testament, Luke 2: 8-17).
The painting was said in the nineteenth century to be signed and dated 1533, but the inscription removed in 1955 (nNo. 78 Di. Titio\') was not original and added no information as to the picture\'s date. It did confirm the identification of the picture with one in an Aldobrandini inventory of 1655 (see below). The early 1530s is nevertheless an acceptable date for this picture; it can be compared with other works from that period (e.g. The Madonna of the Rabbit, Paris, Louvre). There are versions in Florence (Pitti) and Fort Worth (Kimbell); in the former the female saint is identified as Saint Catherine by her attribute of the wheel.
Aldobrandini collection, Rome, 1603 (and accurately described in the 1655 inventory); bought with the Edmond Beaucousin collection, Paris, 1860.
