The dating and original purpose of NG 6337 are controversial. As a cartoon NG 6337 was certainly made in preparation for a painting of the same scale, but it has not been pricked or incised for transfer onto another support. Leonardo made another cartoon (now lost) of the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, Saint John (and a lamb - not included in NG 6337), about 1500-1, and a later painting of the subject is in Paris (Louvre). His approach to the theme is also developed in several smaller drawings. The argument has recently been revived that NG 6337 originated as a commission for Louis XII of France in about 1499-1500; alternatively the cartoon is often dated about 1507-8.
A painted variant of NG 6337, by Andrea del Brescianino, is in Milan (Ambrosiana).
Inherited by Francesco da Melzi, and apparently in Milan until its appearance in the Sagredo collection, Venice, before 1726; subsequently in the collection of Robert Udny; in the collection of the Royal Academy, London, by 1779; presented by the NACF following a public appeal, 1962.
