No convincing interpretation of the juxtaposition of these figures has been proposed. Roberto Longhi coined the title Il Tramonto (Italian for sunset) in 1934.
The painting was rediscovered in 1933 in poor condition with large losses. Large parts of the painting are, in fact, reconstruction and this includes most of the group of Saint George and the dragon and the island, sometimes mistaken for a creature in the water.
Engravings by Giulio Campagnola (about 1482-about 1515/18) such as The Astrologer and The Young Shepherd can be related to the figures in this work. Elements of the landscape are comparable to those in paintings by Titian (see NG 270).
