NG 6270 is one of two large-scale treatments of the Adoration of the Shepherds, painted by Reni late in his career (about 1640). The other version was painted for the Certosa di S. Martino in Naples (where it remains) and shows some differences (there is no agreement on which version was painted first). Malvasia mentioned both pictures in 1678, and said that one version was made \'per germania\' (for Germany). NG 6270 was probably commissioned or acquired by Prince Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein (1611-84).
Reni may have had some studio assistance in the execution of NG 6270.
Collection of Prince Johann Adam of Liechtenstein, Feldsberg, by 1706; bought from his descendants, 1957.
