The figures in the foreground who kneel to adore the monogram include Philip II of Spain, dressed in black, a doge of Venice and a pope. On the right the damned are inside the mouth of hell which is conceived as that of a giant animal (Leviathan). The saved are on the left. The painting combines a Last Judgement with a votive theme, interpreted as an allegory of the Holy League, a union of Spain (Philip II), the Holy See (the pope) and Venice (the doge) which resulted in the victory over the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.
NG 6260 is an autograph version of a larger painting by El Greco, known as The Dream of Philip II (now Monastery of El Escorial, near Madrid). This picture may have been commissioned by Philip II to mark the death in 1578 of Don Juan, his illegitimate brother who led the forces at Lepanto. The style of NG 6260 is of the late 1570s. It is first recorded with a pendant, a reduced replica of the artist\'s Disrobing of Christ (larger version, National Trust, Upton House).
With its pendant in the collection of Don Luis Méndez de Haro y Guzmán, II Conde-Duque de Olivares (died 1675); bought from Lt.-Col. W.J. Stirling of Keir, 1955.
