The man kneeling in profile is probably a member of the Boccaferri family; he may have been painted from a deathmask. He is presented to the Virgin and Child by an unidentified male saint (once said to be Saint Paul). The saint on the right is Saint James, identified by his pilgrim\'s staff. The saint behind Saint James may be Saint Joseph.
NG 623 is evidently the picture glowingly described by Vasari in 1550 as being in the church of S. Domenico in Bologna. It was in a chapel identified in 1666 as the chapel of the Boccaferri family, which was also said to contain representations in fresco of the four patron saints of Bologna.
