The servant girl Hagar (seated and dressed in blue) conceived a son by Abraham, the master of the house in which she worked. Abraham\'s wife, Sarah, who was childless, made her leave and go into the wilderness. An angel descended, prophesied the birth of her son Ishmael, and told her to return to Abraham\'s wife. Old Testament (Genesis 16). The angel points to the hilltop town where Abraham and Sarah presumably live.
The composition of NG 61 corresponds with Liber Veritatis sheet no. 106 (London, British Museum), which records the painting having been executed for an unnamed Paris patron.
The design derives from paintings by Domenichino such as his Landscape with Tobias (NG 48). Claude\'s painting was admired by John Constable, whose Cornfield (NG 130) may in turn recall its structure.
Possibly the Comtesse de Verrue sale, Paris, 1737; Sir George Beaumont Gift, 1823/8.
