Saint Vincent Ferrer (about 1350-1419; canonised in 1455) was one of the great preachers of the fifteenth century. He is depicted in Dominican robes and holding the Gospels. Above, Christ appears in a mandorla, and is flanked by angels holding instruments of his Passion (a sponge of vinegar on a pole, the cross, spear, column, nails, and scourges).
NG 597 was originally the central panel of an altarpiece in the chapel dedicated to Saint Vincent Ferrer, in S. Petronio, Bologna. Saint Peter and Saint John the Baptist were shown to either side (now Milan, Brera), and in panels above there were images of Saint Florian, Saint Lucy and the Crucifixion (now Washington, National Gallery of Art). Twelve small panels of saints were incorporated into the flanking pilasters, and the Annunciation was shown in two small roundels. Episodes from the life of Saint Vincent were represented in the predella (now Rome, Vatican Museums; see also NG 597.1). This altarpiece, the appearance of which is recorded in a drawing of 1725, was commissioned by Floriano Griffoni.
Last reliably recorded in the Griffoni chapel, S. Petronio, Bologna, 1686 (Malvasia); subsequently in the Aldovrandi and Costabili collections; bought from the Costabili collection at Ferrara, 1858.
