In the main panels are, at the left, Saints Michael and John the Baptist, and at the right, a bishop and a female martyr. The Archangel Gabriel and the Annunciate Virgin are depicted in the medallions, while in the pinnacles above are the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist. The pilasters contain saints both on the front and sides. Left front: Saint Benedict; a pope; a monk. Left side: Saint Ansanus(?); a bishop; Saint Peter. Right front: Saints Romuald(?); Catherine of Alexandria; Sebastian(?). Right side: Saints Jerome; Paul; Mary Magdalene(?).
The presence of Saint Romuald and of Saint Benedict, in white, suggests that NG 584 comes from an altarpiece painted for a Camaldolese institution; it is recorded as being from the Camaldolese nunnery of S. Giovanni Evangelista, Pratovecchio. A painting representing the Virgin of the Assumption in that church may have been the central panel of the altarpiece. The whole work was probably painted in the 1450s. It has in the past been attributed to the Master of Pratovecchio, to Andrea dal Castagno and been associated with the work of Giovanni di Francesco.
