The Ascension of John the Evangelist is shown in the central panel; in the roundel above is the Descent into Hell, with (left) the broken gates of Hell with the Devil, and (right) possibly Adam and Eve. In the left roundel is Saint Michael and in the right Saint Raphael with Tobias; in the pinnacles are the Trinity (centre), the Angel Gabriel (left) and the Virgin Annunciate (right). The predella shows three scenes from the life of Saint John the Evangelist. (See Appendix B for a larger reproduction.)
NG 580 was probably the high altarpiece for the Camaldolese church of S. Giovanni Evangelista at Pratovecchio.
