A knight who had previously doubted the authenticity of the stigmata is convinced by the wound in the saint\'s side; the story continued the parallels between Saint Francis and Christ, in whose Resurrection Saint Thomas would not believe until he thrust his hand into the wound in Christ\'s side. The woman in the foreground is presumably the Blessed Jacopa (a Franciscan tertiary, who died at Assisi), the only woman present at Saint Francis\'s death.
NG 4757-63 are parts of the back of the high altarpiece of S. Francesco, Borgo Sansepolcro, showing scenes from the life of Saint Francis tiered in two groups of four panels on either side of Saint Francis in Glory (Settignano, Berenson Collection). NG 4763 was probably in the bottom-right corner of the reverse immediately adjacent to the panel showing the saint receiving the stigmata (NG 4760); for further details on the altarpiece see under NG 4757.
Collection of Abate Angelucci, Arezzo, by 1819; bought with contributions from the NACF, Benjamin Guinness and Lord Bearsted, 1934.
