The figures are dwarfed by the cavernous interior of a huge temple. At the right is an altar with a high priest seated before it, while in the foreground the Pharisees and Scribes have brought an adulterous woman before Christ. They ask him whether she should be stoned to death, the punishment for adultery in the Mosaic law. They were hoping to trick him into denying the Mosaic law. The woman kneels, tearful, on the steps, and Christ, whose height emphasises his importance in the composition, looks down at her. His reply to the Pharisees was, \'He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.\' New Testament (John 8: 3).
NG 45 displays some characteristics of the artist\'s works from the previous decade; the elaborate setting for example recalls Simeon and the Infant Christ in the Temple of 1631 (The Hague, Mauritshuis). The freely drawn foreground figures, however, are entirely consistent with Rembrandt\'s style in the mid-1640s.
Probably in the inventory of the dealer Johannes de Renialme, Amsterdam, 1657; Willem Six (nephew of Jan) collection, Amsterdam, by 1718; bought with the J.J. Angerstein collection, 1824.
