Nothing is known of the origin of this picture, which is generally thought to be an early work by Titian.
The picture shows the influence of Giorgione, especially in the treatment of the Virgin and Child. This type of horizontal devotional scene set in a landscape was developed by Giovanni Bellini (e.g. NG 599) and was popular in Venice throughout the sixteenth century.
