The older woman and youngest child also appear in another painting attributed to the brothers, Landscape with Chapel (Hartford, Connecticut, Wadsworth Atheneum).
X-radiographs reveal that the composition is painted over a bust-length portrait of a man who is bearded and wears a ruff. The man\'s costume can be dated to around the 1620s; the portrait may also have been the work of the brothers Le Nain. A strip at the bottom of the canvas is an addition.
