NG 3862 was painted at Arles in November 1888 when Van Gogh was working in the company of Gauguin. Van Gogh painted a pendant, Gauguin\'s Chair (Amsterdam, Rijksmusuem Vincent Van Gogh), and the pictures were apparently intended to represent the contrasting personalities of the two artists. In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote that one gives the effect by day, the other by night. Van Gogh\'s own rustic chair, shown in natural light with his pipe, tobacco and the sprouting onions in the background, evokes an image of simplicity and directness. By contrast, Gauguin\'s more elaborate chair is shown in artificial light with a candle and books to suggest an artist who works from his imagination.
Van Gogh retouched NG 3862 in January 1889 after Gauguin\'s departure.
