A portrait of Albert (NG 3818) forms a pendant to this work. Both compositions were engraved in 1615 as after Rubens. The artist was appointed painter to the court of the sitters in 1609. After the archduke\'s death in 1621 Rubens became a close adviser to Isabella. These portraits were probably painted in the artist\'s studio after prototypes by the master that no longer survive.
