The Virgin was often represented enthroned with her Child asleep on her lap, but here she sits on the ground, like the medieval Virgin of Humility (e.g. Dalmatian School NG 4250). The wading bird in combat with a snake may be an allegory of sin defeated, but such a sight may have been no more uncommon than the labourers, the cattle and the well which appear in the background.
NG 599 probably dates from about 1500 and can be compared stylistically withBellini\'s Baptism of 1502 (Vicenza, S. Corona).
Bellini modelled the landscape on that of the Venetian mainland. The buildings in the background recur in other works from his studio. The flesh and drapery are much damaged.
