NG 33 was commissioned in January 1526 by Maria Bufalini for a chapel in the church of S. Salvatore in Lauro, Rome. While Parmigianino was working on the altarpiece Rome was sacked by Imperial troops (in 1527) and he fled the city. The altarpiece remained in Rome (at one time it was in the refectory at S. Maria della Pace) until removed in about 1558 to the Bufalini chapel in the church of S. Agostino in Città di Castello. Vasari\'s revised account of these events has been substantiated by recent archival discoveries.
Numerous drawings made in preparation for NG 33 survive.
Bought by James Durno probably about 1789; presented by the Directors of the British Institution, 1826.
