The identification of the painting as a self portrait is based on the inscription on a watercolour copy made of the work in 1792 by Aert Schouman (Amsterdam, van Regteren Altena collection) who owned NG 2864, and on comparison with Lucas Vorsterman\'s engraved portrait of Lievens after Van Dyck.
The picture shows Lievens working under the powerful influence of Van Dyck. It probably dates from about 1638 when Lievens was in his early thirties and living in Antwerp.
Possibly in the collection of Susanna van Sonnervelt, The Hague, 1696; presented by Charles Fairfax Murray, 1912.
