NG 271 was inspired by one of the numerous versions of this subject painted by Guido Reni (e.g. Paris, Louvre). NG 271, which may have been painted as late as the early eighteenth century, has a provenance from the collection of Cardinal Valenti Gonzaga in Rome. NG 271 can be seen in a painting by Giovanni Paolo Panini which shows a view of Valenti\'s gallery, painted in 1749 (Hartford, Wadsworth Atheneum).
