The Coronation of the Virgin does not have a biblical source. The three persons of the Trinity are represented: God the Father (right), Jesus Christ (left) and the dove of the Holy Ghost (centre).
NG 263 and 2154 are two panels from a group of eight which formed two wings of an altarpiece and depicted scenes from, during and after Christ\'s Passion. The other panels (which were originally on two panels that have subsequently been cut into fragments) are in the Westfälisches Landesmuseum, Münster. NG 263 was at the lower right of the right wing. It has sometimes been suggested that these panels came from the Kloster-Kirche in Liesborn and that they formed the shutters to the Liesborn altarpiece; hence the Master of Cappenberg could be identified as Jan Baegert (who was paid for painting the shutters of the high altarpiece at Liesborn in 1520). Although the provenance of the panels does not confirm this, the suggestion seems very plausible.
From the abbey church at Liesborn or Marienfeld; in the Krüger collection, Aachen, by 1833; from where bought, 1854.
