In the left foreground is a kaag - a Dutch vessel with a straight raking stem and clinker-built. The ship on the right, a man-of-war, has the arms of the Province of Holland (a lion rampant) on her stern and a Dutch flag at the main.
NG 2573 was painted by Willem van de Velde for the van de Velde studio in Amsterdam. It shows the influence of Simon de Vlieger.
