The instrument has a landscape painted on the inside of the lid. In the foreground rests a viola da gamba with the bow placed between the strings, and at the back of the room hangs a painting which has been identified as Dirck van Baburen\'s The Procuress (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts). This work was also included in Vermeer\'s Concert (Boston, Isabella Stewart-Gardner Museum). A tapestry frames the scene at the upper left, and the skirting in the lower right is decorated with Delft tiles. Whether or not the subject of the The Procuress is intended to have a bearing on the meaning of the whole work is not clear; it is probable that a general association between music and love is intended.
NG 2568 has been dated on grounds of style to about 1670.
It has been suggested that NG 2568 is a pair to Vermeer NG 1383; for discussion of this theory and a note about the ownership of the paintings in the nineteenth century see the entry for the latter painting.
Possibly collection of Diego Duarte, Antwerp, 1682; collection of Etienne-Joseph-Théophile Thoré (Thoré-Bürger), Paris, 1867; Salting Bequest, 1910.
