The building on the right has been identified as the tower of Malghera (or Marghera) near Mestre, a relic of the ancient Venetian fortifications. It was demolished in the nineteenth century.
Datable on comparison with other works by the artist to the 1770s.
Although not derived directly from it, NG 2524 may have been inspired by an etching of the same subject by Canaletto.
