The village of Arleux is between Cambrai and Douai in north-east France.
This sketch dates from April - July 1871. In April 1871 Corot moved away from Paris and the upheaval of the Commune to stay with his friend and biographer Alfred Robaut in Douai. Corot described his particular fascination with the marshes around Arleux. Four other pictures that he started on this trip to the Artois are in the National Gallery: NG 2628, 6466, 6467 and 6531.
The fence in the foreground appears to have been scratched in the wet paint with the end of a brush.
Bought by Fantin-Latour at the Corot studio sale, 1875; bequeathed by Mrs Edwin Edwards, 1907.
