The typography of this inscription is modern; the original probably read, ECCE AGNUS DEI (Behold the Lamb of God), as usually carried by the Baptist.
Christ is depicted enthroned as Christ of the Apocalypse (New Testament, Revelation 1: 13ff.). He has hair \'as white as snow\' and wears a long cloak with a golden girdle; in his right hand he holds a globe with seven stars and in his left two golden keys (those of death and hell). A two-edged sword is just visible in his mouth. Above each of the three figures is a seraph in a quatrefoil.
These three pinnacles are thought to be from an altarpiece which included in the main tier: Christ Enthroned (Milan, Pinacoteca di Brera), inscribed with texts from the Apocalypse, and Eleven Saints (Turin, Galleria Sabauda). The right panel of the main tier is missing. Two predella panels (Paris, Bacri collection) have also been associated with the altarpiece. The dimensions of NG 579.6-8, and the apocalyptic theme, link them with the Milan and Turin panels. The work is datable to about 1364-6. The site it was originally commissioned for remains unknown. When acquired, the pinnacles were incorrectly associated with the altarpiece attributed to Niccolò di Pietro Gerini (NG 579.1-5).
Bought from the Lombardi-Baldi collection, Florence, 1857.
