NG 17 appears to be a variant of a signed picture in St Petersburg (Hermitage), which differs by the inclusion on the right of Saint Catherine. Dating of both pictures has fluctuated, but a date of about 1513 is probable.
The pentimenti in NG 17 (e.g. Saint Elizabeth\'s hand) have led to the suggestion that the picture preceded the St Petersburg version. However, they are more explicable as changes made on a workshop variant of that picture produced under the supervision, and possibly with the involvement, of Sarto. There is a sixteenth-century copy of the St Petersburg picture in the Royal Collection.
