Margaretha wears a large ruff and gown that were fashionable about 40 years earlier. She continued to live in Dordrecht after her husband\'s death in 1661 and died there in 1672, aged 89.
For discussion of the circumstances of the commission of these pendant portraits, see NG 1674. On stylistic grounds the pair are dated to about 1661.
The canvas appears to have been cut down on all four sides, particularly at the right, and presumably at the same time as its pendant. The artist made a number of changes to the sitter\'s position and the details of her costume, which can be seen on the X-radiograph. Her left hand was originally placed in her lap and then to the right of its present position. The shape of the ruff around her neck would also seem to have been altered more than once; initially it was tilted more towards the viewer. Finally, her white cuffs seem originally to have been trimmed with lace.
With NG 1674 probably in the Lee Family collection in the eighteenth century; bought, 1899.
