This composition, which is known in other versions, is closely related to a picture by the artist, dated to 1733, that was exhibited at the Salon, possibly in 1734, and definitely in 1737 (Stockholm, Nationalmuseum). It was popularised by the engraving of the Stockholm version of 1739.
An early owner of the work was the painter Baron Louis-Auguste Schwiter whose portrait is also in the Collection (see Delacroix NG 3286).
Possibly either the Jacques-Augustin de Silvestre collection, from 1773, or the Lempereur sale, 1773; certainly the Baron Schwiter collection before 1848; bought, 1898.
