Above are God the Father, and the Holy Ghost represented as a dove. New Testament (all four Gospels, e.g. Matthew 3: 13-17). At the top an angel is depicted in a medallion. In the left wing is Saint Peter, and in the right Saint Paul. The subjects of the predella are, from left to right: Saint Benedict; the Angel Gabriel appearing to Zacharias; the Birth of Saint John the Baptist; Saint John the Baptist decapitated; the Feast of Herod; Salome bringing the Baptist\'s head to Herodias; Saint Romuald.
When NG 579 entered the gallery three pinnacles (see Giovanni da Milano NG 579.6-8) were attached to it. It is possible that the altarpiece is missing pinnacles and pilasters at either side, and it has been suggested that a pinnacle with the Blessing Redeemer (Munich, Alte Pinakothek) originally formed part if it. An inscription (now obliterated) was recorded below the central compartment stating that the work was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1337(?). The style of the work suggests the date was probably 1387. It is possibly the altarpiece commissioned for the Stoldi Chapel in S. Maria degli Angeli, Florence, by the family of Don Filippo Neroni, which was completed in that year.
