Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, near Jerusalem (represented here as a walled city filled with Roman monuments), while three of his disciples sleep. Angels reveal to Jesus the instruments of his Passion. Judas approaches with the Roman soldiers. New Testament (Mark 14: 32-43).
This undocumented picture is clearly related to Mantegna\'s other version of the subject (Tours, Musée des Beaux-Arts), which can be dated 1457-9. The reversal of the composition and the rearrangement of the disciples in NG 1417 suggest that it was made later than the version in Tours. It might be the unidentified picture made in Padua in 1459 for Giacomo Antonio Marcello, or, as has recently been suggested, it might have been painted for the Este of Ferrara.
The composition may owe something to a drawing (London, British Museum) by Jacopo Bellini. Giovanni Bellini treated the subject in a way reminiscent of Mantegna (Bellini NG 726 was probably painted later than NG 1417). An illuminated manuscript which copies the figure of Christ, formerly in the National Gallery, has now been transferred to the British Museum.
Aldobrandini collection, Rome, by 1603 (perhaps previously in the Este collection, Ferrara, 1586); collection of Cardinal Fesch by 1841; collection of W. Coningham by 1845/6; collection of Thomas Baring by 1853; bought, 1894.
