NG 578, together with NG 569-77, was part of the high altarpiece of S. Pier Maggiore, Florence (see Appendix A for a reconstruction). The altarpiece, probably designed by Niccolò di Pietro Gerini who collaborated with Jacopo di Cione on a number of occasions, was begun in 1370; the painting has been attributed to Jacopo and his workshop. Documents concerning materials used - including pigments, eggs and gold - and work involved - such as varnishing - survive. The altarpiece was probably paid for by the Albizzi family. The high altar was dedicated to Saint Peter and six panels of his life (now in various collections) probably formed the predella mentioned in documents of 1371. The altarpiece was finished in that year.
The composition of NG 578 may derive from Andrea da Firenze\'s fresco of the subject in the Chapter House (now known as the Spanish Chapel) at S. Maria Novella, Florence, painted in 1365-7. Unusu
S. Pier Maggiore, Florence, by 1568, presumably since 1371 and until the eighteenth century; bought from the Lombardi-Baldi collection, 1857.
