The composition may derive from the frescoes in the Chapter House of S. Maria Novella, Florence, painted by Andrea da Firenze in 1365-7. NG 577 was part of the upper tier of the high altarpiece of S. Pier Maggiore, Florence; see commentary under NG 578 and the reconstruction in Appendix A.
