Landscapes are seen through windows to either side of the Virgin and Child.
If the identification of the inscription as a signature is accepted, this is the only known painting by Andrea di Aloigi. On the basis of comparison with NG 1220, a tondo (Paris, Louvre) has recently been attributed to this artist. NG 1220 probably dates to the 1490s and is obviously indebted to Perugino.
Collection of Giovanni Metzger, Florence, by 1821; collection of the Revd J. Sanford by 1837; bought from Lord Methuen, 1886.
