NG 1193 is a preliminary modello for an altarpiece (now destroyed) painted in 1737-8 for the Augustinian church of S. Salvatore, Venice. The composition of the lost altarpiece was copied in a drawing in 1746 by Franz Martin Kuen (1719-71), and is closely related to NG 1193.
Other versions of the subject (both by and after Tiepolo) are known.
Probably in the collection of Lord Ward by 1854 (and certainly by 1868); bought (Lewis Fund), 1885.
