Saint Veronica holds the cloth miraculously impressed with Christ\'s image. Behind her is the Virgin accompanied by Saint John the Evangelist and two Holy Women. New Testament (Matthew 27: 30-3).
NG 1143 is identifiable with a picture mentioned by Vasari in 1550 as painted for the church of S. Gallo, Florence. He claimed that it contained recognisable portraits; the figure looking out of the picture on the far left would seem to be a portrait - so too perhaps is the figure on the extreme right. The narrative subject of the picture is rare in Florentine altarpieces of the period (although it recurs in a similar altarpiece by Benedetto Ghirlandaio in the Louvre, Paris), and the picture may have come from a chapel dedicated to Saint Veronica who is prominent in the foreground. Vasari implies that NG 1143 was one of Ridolfo\'s earliest important commissions. The influence of Leonardo is apparent in the head of the soldier to the right of Christ.
Recorded in the church of S. Gallo, Florence, 1550; bought from the heirs of the Antinori family in Florence, 1883.
