Old Testament (Isaiah 7: 14).
The Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin that she is to bear the Son of God, as prophesied by Isaiah. New Testament (Luke 1: 26-35). The Holy Spirit descends from Heaven in the form of a dove; the lilies in a vase symbolise the Virgin\'s purity.
NG 1139 was the first scene on the front predella of Duccio\'s Maestà, which was installed in Siena Cathedral in 1311. Further information on this altarpiece is given under NG 1330.
The little finger of the angel\'s blessing hand was originally extended. The style of underdrawing, found also in NG 566, which is visible in infra-red reflectography, suggests that NG 1139 was designed by Duccio himself. The orange area below the angel\'s wing was once intended to be gilded like the section above. The damage to the base was probably caused by the removal of the integral frame.
