New Testament narratives are represented on the plinth of the Virgin\'s throne: (right to left) the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, the Massacre of the Innocents, the Flight into Egypt and Christ among the Doctors. The Temptation of Adam and Eve is represented below the Virgin\'s feet, alluding to her role as the \'second Eve\'. The Annunciation is shown in the spandrels above the Virgin\'s throne. On either side of the arch are: the Sacrifice of Isaac (right) and probably Esther before Ahasuerus.
NG 1119 was painted for the high altar of the Oratory of the Conception (attached to the church of S. Francesco) in Ferrara. It was probably commissioned by Carlo and Camillo Strozzi and was begun by Maineri (active 1489-1506) who is responsible for the highly ornamental throne and for the smaller narratives. It was finished, probably in 1499 in Maineri\'s absence, by Costa who completed and revised the large figures (but only modifying Saint William slightly). A lunette of the Pietà with Four Saints (Ferrara, private collection) has been associated with NG 11
Recorded in the Oratorio della Concezione, S. Francesco, Ferrara, 1621; bought from the Marchese Massimiliano Strozzi, 1882.
