In the centre is the crucified Christ. On the left the Virgin and three holy women mourn; Saint John stands on the right. In the left background Christ falls under the cross on his way to Calvary, while in the right background he is being taken down from the cross.
NG 1049 is the central panel of a triptych formerly in the church of St Columba, Cologne, the shutters of which are in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; they show Christ before Pilate and The Deposition. When the triptych is closed it shows two donors kneeling (on the right) and observing the Mass of Saint Gregory (on the left panel). Coats of arms identify the donors as Hermann Rinck (Mayor of Cologne in 1480 and 1488, died 1496) and his wife Gertrud von Dallem.
Recorded as having been brought from Flanders to England at the time of the French Revolution; presented by Edward Shipperdson, 1847.
