NG 479 was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807. In Turner\'s second will of 1831 he specified that the picture (along with NG 498) should hang in the National Gallery between two paintings by Claude (NG 14 and 12).
Five sketches at the Tate Gallery can be related to the composition.
