In the early nineteenth century NG 89 was attributed to Velázquez. It is in fact by Sustermans, but may also include the participation of members of his studio. The costumes of the sitters seem to date from the 1660s. The poses of the two figures correspond with two single portraits of them by Sustermans (Florence, Uffizi). It is possible that earlier drawings were used for NG 89 and that it was not painted directly from life.
