Above these lateral panels are Saint Gaudioso and Saint Filippo Benizzi (upper right).
NG 297 was painted as the high altarpiece of the church of S. Alessandro, Brescia. Saint Alessandro was included as the titular saint; Saint Gaudioso, the fifth-century bishop of Brescia, was buried in the church, and Saint Filippo Benizzi was included as the fifth general of the Servites, the order to whom the church belonged. Originally a Saint John and the Magdalen lamenting the Dead Christ was at the top of the altarpiece, and an Annunciation and Adoration of the Kings were on shutters that covered the altarpiece. A seventeenth-century description of the altarpiece states that the frame bore the date 1525, a date which is borne out by the style of NG 297. See page XXX for a larger reproduction of this work.
NG 297 was said (in 1700) to have been painted in competition with Titian\'s altarpiece for the church of SS. Nazaro e Celso in Brescia (dated 1522). It certainly reflects a knowledge of Titian\'s work in both Brescia and Venice.
Recorded by Ridolfi in the church of S. Alessandro, Brescia, 1648; Averoldi collection, Brescia, by 1826; bought, 1857.
