NG 296 has been cut down, probably on all sides. It has sometimes been considered to be by the young Perugino; however, the picture is close to the works that form the basis of all attributions to Verrocchio.
Verrocchio was a sculptor and goldsmith as well as a painter. His workshop was noted for the careful rendering of expensive fabrics and jewellery, both of which are exceptionally well represented in NG 296.
