A lecturer is demonstrating the creation of a vacuum: air is pumped out of the glass bowl in which a white cockatoo has been placed. The bird will expire if the lecturer continues to deprive it of oxygen. The reactions of the onlookers range from the distress of a child to the self-absorption of lovers. The couple on the left may be Thomas Coltman and Mary Barlow, the sitters in NG 6496.
NG 725 was recognised by contemporary viewers as a very remarkable picture, a judgement that has been reiterated ever since. In Wright\'s account book NG 725 was described in a list of \'Candle Light pictures\' as \'The Air Pump\'. The verso of a study made in preparation for the picture was later reused for a self portrait (private collection). Air pumps were developed in the seventeenth century and were relatively familiar by Wright\'s day; the subject of the picture is therefore more of a demonstration than an experiment.
