New Testament (Luke 1: 26-35). The Holy Spirit descends from Heaven in the form of a dove and light is shown around an opening in the front of the Virgin\'s dress. Lilies in a vase symbolise the Virgin\'s purity, and the hortus conclusus (walled garden) is a reference to the Song of Solomon (4: 12) and relates to the Virgin\'s purity.
On the parapet (below the vase) is a device in grisaille of three feathers and a ring. This was associated with the Medici family and NG 666 was probably painted for a Medici palace, possibly in the late 1450s, and intended for a related, but perhaps separate room, to NG 667. The patron is not certain. See under NG 667 for further comment.
Acquired from the Palazzo Riccardi (formerly Palazzo Medici) by the Metzger brothers shortly before 1848; acquired by Sir Charles Eastlake about 1855; by whom presented, 1861.
