NG 664 may have formed part of a large winged altarpiece of the Life of Christ. Other paintings from the same series are: The Annunciation (Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum); an unpublished Adoration of the Kings (private collection, known also from a pen drawing after Bouts in the Uffizi, Florence) and The Resurrection (Pasadena, Norton Simon Museum). A Crucifixion (Brussels, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts) was possibly the central section of this altarpiece. The choice of linen as a support may have been intentional so as to ease transportation to an Italian patron.
Works on linen were extremely common in the fifteenth century, but very few have survived (see also Massys NG 3664).
