L582 was probably painted in Florence about 1507-8, and can be compared with other paintings of the Virgin and Child of about this date (e.g. Large Cowper Madonna, Washington, National Gallery of Art). The picture was famous in the mid-nineteenth century, but was subsequently considered to be one of many copies of the composition until rediscovered and published in 1992.
Apparently in a French collection since the seventeenth century; bought in Paris by Vincenzo Camuccini, probably in 1828; bought with the Camuccini collection in Rome by the 4th Duke of Northumberland, 1853; on loan from the the Trustees of the 10th Duke of Northumberland Wills Trust since 1991.
