The sitter clasps in his right hand a rolled paper which is marked with lettering that cannot be deciphered. The inscription on the cracked stone parapet declares the authorship and date of the painting but does not clearly state the identity of the subject. It has been suggested that the Greek may be translated as Tymotheos (Timothy) and could relate directly to the sitter (although this is unlikely because it would be a highly unusual Christian name for the period), or refer to the musician Timotheus of Miletus (about 400 BC), so indicating the sitter\'s profession.
Bought from Karl Ross, Munich, 1857.
