On the left is perched a starling, while a squirrel eating a nut crouches on the sitter\'s arm; she holds it by a chain, indicating it is her pet. Squirrels were common pets in sixteenth-century England. The half-length format is characteristic of Holbein\'s portraits.
The painting probably dates from the years of Holbein\'s first brief visit to England, 1526-8, as it is most closely comparable to the portraits of those years and the sitter\'s dress appears to be English in style. The sitter has not been identified, although it is possible that both the squirrel and starling were intended to allude to a family name or coat of arms. She wears a fur hat similar to that worn by the step-daughter of Sir Thomas More, Margaret Giggs, in a drawing by Holbein (Windsor, Royal Collection), but their features are quite distinct.
